Bruce Gurnham of The Whitman Travel Group is pleased to be offering a customized "Sampler" style tour blending some of Britain's finest natural and man made features with Ireland's dramatic Emerald countryside. Together we will experience castles, bird sanctuaries, museums, historic Roman sites, classic lakeside scenery, romantic moors, lively cities, Irish gardens, traditional villages, spectacular cliffside vistas, open air museums, Celtic ruins and more. We carefully blend attractions with dining, entertainment and learning about the lifestyles encountered in the English and Irish countryside as well as cityscapes.

Our England/Ireland Adventure is a customized discovery holiday that explores some of Britain's landmark villages, historic Roman sites, scenic seaports and rugged seacoasts,Open Air Museums, the majestic rolling Yorkshire Dales countryside, the classic Northumbrian seacoast by Seahouses and the Romantic Lakes, fabled land of Wordsworth, Ruskin and Beatrix Potter.For the second portion of the trip, we travel by highspeed ferry from Liverpool to Dublin.The Emerald Isle, Leprechaun Land, Crystal, Guinness Stout and Celtic Colors are all expressions coming to mind when "Ireland" enters the conversation. And they all become reality during our Ireland Discovery Adventure.

Our trip is a holiday sampler of rolling hills, waterfalls, scenic vistas, historic castles & cathedrals, monastic sites, glorious gardens, distilleries, and traditional Irish villages; all blended with the music, beverage, food and lifestyles of the Irish people. Here we enter the bustling Irish city life of music, history, shopping, architecture and more. We then venture out into the Celtic world of the Emerald shaded countryside, monolithic sites, spectacular scenery, and classic villages of unrivalled beauty.

A quality, representative excursion featuring British history and Irish culture, together in the same time frame. The design of this special interest adventure tour provides an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the landscape both motoring and on foot, to meet the people in their villages and to sample the customs of two island nations diverse regions. The trip is truly a holiday sampler of famous city scapes, scenic villages and fishing seaports, natural attractions, national parks and world heritage sites blended with the lifestyles, traditions and crafts of the English and Irish. We will sample, as well, the beverage, food and hospitality in the villages where our acquaintenances reside.

This customized holiday with friends is a 14 day and 13 nights guided excursion that includes a blend of regional events, visits to renowned heritage sites, scenic attractions, classic cities for Victorian shopping. Our itinerary will provides us 2 nights in the quaint village of Alnwick,"World of Harry Potter", 2 nights in historic Corbridge near Hadrian's Wall, 2 nights in Kendal of the romantic Lakes District, the highspeed ferry to Dublin with 2 nights in the city, 2 nights near Galway and finally 3 nights in Killarney.

Bamburgh Castle:

the 14th century stronghold of the Percy family, offers majestic turreted keep, rooms of tapestries, paintings and a notable armament collection as well as magnificent views of Bamburgh Beach

Holy Island and Lindisfarne:

accessible only at low tide, and is home to the ruins of the Lindisfarne Priory and Benedictine Monastery. Also famous for producing Lindisfarne Mead to this day. Lindisfarne Castle rises high above the eastern side of the island on a rocky mound.

Farnes Islands Bird Sanctuary:

a paradise for bird watchers, as the 28 islands host over 70,000 pairs of sea birds during peak nesting times. A seal colony of over 2,000 greys will be seen on our boat trip to the islands off of Seahouses

Vindolanda:

located one mile of Hadrian's wall on the original Roman Road called Stanegate, is an active archeological site which has produced the oldest written records in Britain, dating to 90 a.d.

Beamish Museum:

a traditional open air museum that brings history of northern England alive for the visitor, from the village bakery to the cottages and numerous storefronts

Yorkshire Dales:

famous for Rolling green hillsides, waterfalls and leisure countryside strolls, the Yorkshire Dales National Park environs host us for three days; we explore the Brontes countryside, the land of James Herriot and the Bowes Museum in scenic Barnard Castle.

Windermere Steamer:
Lakes District

we steam launch leisurely on the Swan from Newby Bridge to Bowness where we spend time looking in all the shops, pubs and local museums of the area where National Parks reign supreme.

Classic Lake District:

We explore Hawkshead, visit Beatrix Potter's Hilltop and Gallery, roam the Fabled Lakes of Wordsworth and visit the famous villages of Ambleside, Bowness and Grasmere

Dublin

Guides Bruce and Nancy Gurnham greet you at Dublin Airport eager to take you into the lively city of Dublin. Dublin is a city renown for history, culture, leisure and friendly pub going people. We will visit Trinity College, the Old Library, see the Book of Kells, take in Jamieson Distillery, stroll about Temple Bar, frequent a pub or two and tour numerous other sites including O'Connell Street, Grafton Street, Christ Church Cathedral and Georgian Dublin.

Newgrange

We day trip to Boyne Valley north, home to Ireland's greatest archeology treasures. Newgrange, a 5000 year old passage tomb, will receive us through its informative visitor center.

The Burren

A geological wonder akin to a lunar landscape, a limestone desert of awesome dimensions. After a visit to the well presented visitor center we go "down under" in a visit to the Ailwee Caves, an underground wonder of bridged chasms, geological formations and a thundering waterfall.

Cliffs of Moher

The grey stone grassy topped Cliffs of Moher rise majestically over 600 feet above the Atlantic Ocean on the Western coastline of Ireland. Views of the Aran Islands,from the stone watchtower at the summit of the cliffs, are well worth the short climb.

Killarney

This busy market town at the head of the beautiful Killarney Lakes is our comfortable base for exploring the famous Ring of Kerry, Dingle Penninsula, Bearra Seacoast drive as well as Killarney National Park, the Muckross House and Gardens.

Ilnacullin Island

A short boat ride past seal covered islets in Glengarriff harbor we land on Garinish Island, a 37 acre "Island Garden". Our peaceful ramble over the island shows us walled gardens, an Italian Chapel, the Greek Temple, the Martello Tower and remarkable vistas of nearby islands and the mainland.

Kenmare

Gaelic for "Head of the Sea" Kenmare offers a picturesque setting nestled between the mountains of Kerry and the Kenmare River Valley. The town centre features The Kenmare Heritage Centre, numerous shops with traditional Irish crafts and specialty gives of all sorts. The village is surrounded by stone circles, historic towers & ancient monuments.

Ring of Kerry

Perhaps southwest Ireland's most celebrated peninsula, the Ring of Kerry drive offers majestic seacoast views, picture perfect villages, the Derrynane Estate and Gardens, Valentia Island, Kells Bay and emerald green fields patchwork quilted by stone walls. All this is ringed about the mountainous backbone of the Penninsula, beginning with the Macgillycuddy Reeks outside Killarney.

Slea Head

Cliffside Splendor, emerald green hillsides and pinkish white sand beaches, all the elements of the film, "Ryan's Daughter"; this is Slea Head the western tip of the Dingle Peninsula.

Dingle peninsula

Your guides favorite "world" in Ireland from the freshly painted bright colored village of Dingle to the famine cottages, marble monuments, Celtic Crafts and cobblestone street villages. We spend an entire day exploring this famous peninsula from Castlemaine to Castlegregory.

Dunguaire Castle

Our Farewell to Ireland is an enchanting evening in 500 year old Dunguaire Castle, a Irish Fortress on the Shores of Galway Bay. A traditional dinner and Irish literary entertainment provide us with a night to remember.

Lodging on all of our tours is selected from a range of high quality, comfortable B & Bs, country manors, small family run hotels, specialty castles, hunting lodges and when necessary for convenience, a western style hotel. We stay most of the tour, either two or three nights in the same place for comfort and relaxation. Travel time and mileage occasionally may require a one night stay.
