Bruce Gurnham of The Whitman Travel Group takes you on a new adventure tour to meet Stateside colonial history enthusiasts in their homes and historic sites. We experience Southern Lowland Villages, colonial restoration villages, classic homes, historic city scapes, quaint villages, scenic countryside and legendary seacoast communities.

The Old and New Side by Side

A historical sampler of the United States East coast From Savannah, Georgia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This sightseers delight blends a sampling of community history from Colonial times to current day. The tour is a carefully designed and assembled patchwork mosaic of historic meccas from Charleston to Williamsburg. We visit museums, scenic villages, gardens, grand estates, shopping port of calls and meet up with friendly people from the southeastern states.


Destinations include Savannah, Georgia(2 nights), Hilton Head Island and Charleston, South Carolina(2 nights), New Bern, North Carolina(2 nights), Colonial Williamsburg, Viginia (2 nights), Mount Vernon, the nations capital Washington, D.C.(3 nights) and finally, the greater Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area(3 nights)including the Amish Country. This customized Holiday Tour of Eastern United States, is a 15 day/14 night guided excursion that includes a blend of local events, classic shopping, studio and craft shop visits , as well as visits to renowned heritage sites, scenic attractions, and classic cities for personal free time adventures.


The design of this special interest adventure tour provides an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the landscape both in the countryside and select cities of the eastern United States seaboard, to meet new people and old friends in their villages and to sample the customs of diverse regions that we visit.
The trip is truly a holiday sampler of famous city scapes, colonial villages and historic seaports, natural attractions, national parks and world heritage sites blended with the lifestyles, traditions and crafts of the east coast. We will sample, as well, the beverage, food and hospitality in the villages where our past companions reside. We look forward to introducing you to our travelling friends and providing you with the chance to make new friends from Georgia to Pennsylvania and all places in between.

Savannah, Georgia

This romantic Southern Belle of a town offers us historic homes, city markets, shops and more. We partake of a Old Town Trolley tour, dine at the Pirates House, walk about city squares bedecked with gardens, visit the River Street shops and experience a Ghosts & Gravestones Historic District Night Walk.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

The white sandy beach lined Hilton Head Island provides us opportunity for shopping, viewing of elegant traditional Low Country estates, and a private party aboard a luxury power yacht on the intra coastal waterway of the Carolina's east coast.

Charleston, South Carolina

Our Charleston visit begins with an orienting Olde Town Horse Drawn Carriage ride; following we explore prime attractions like the Charleston Museum with its gallery of antique quilts, stroll through the Old Marketplace, meeting the local "Gulah" ladies, and still have free time left for a Charleston Mansion, and sample Charleston cuisine.

Middleton Place Plantation

This National Historic Landmark is a delicately preserved 1700's plantation that has weathered wars, natural disasters and the effects of time. We tour the gardens, House/Museum and stables of the 4 generation home of the Middleton Family; from signers of the Declaration of Independance to Ministers to Russia.

New Bern, North Carolina

The historic 1700's seaport of New Bern once served as Colonial Capital, and is famous for Tryon Palace, the Royal Governors Palace. We discover the 13 acre estate; walking the gardens and visiting the two classic homes on the grounds, the John Wright Stanley House and the Dixon-Stevenson House. We also spend an afternoon in the towns trio of Historic Districts.

Colonial Williamsburg

The world class 18th century village of Williamsburg provides us with a full day of experiencing remarkable colonial homes, lively taverns, active craft shops and stately government buildings. Costumed guides aid our enjoyment of the village, recreating colonial times. Period garbed artisans practice their trades; bakers, shoemakers, silversmiths, candlemakers and more.The Rockefeller Folk Art Center and the Dewitt Wallace Gallery round out our visit with their costume, textile, folk art and colonial memorabilia displays.

Washington D.C.

Our visit to the nations capital is a sampler of legendary monuments; Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington; the Capitol Building, Whitehouse and the Smithsonian Institution. Our visit is set on a backdrop of flowering trees, tulips and azaleas. Apropos to our Old and New theme, we also visit the Viet Nam Monument and other modern day tributes.

Eastern Pennsylvania:

Amish Country, Lancaster, Strasbourg and Winterthur: From the beautiful simplicity of horse drawn buggies, gas lit shops and scherenschnitte to the impressive magnificence of the duPont Estate and Longwood Gardens, we ramble our way leisurely through it all.

Philadelphia:

The "City of Brotherly Love" weaves history, art, entertainment and fine dining in a great city of Lights, Camera and Action. We visit a few highlights; the Franklin Institute, Betsy Ross House, Independance Hall, the Society Hill areas and wrap things up with visits the the to Head House Tavern for farewells to the city.

Activities, Attractions and Scenery

Everywhere you look in this unique county you will see the Colonial, British and Spanish chapters of the eastern seaboard's history book. Activities center around the crafts, culture, heritage and religion depicted in museums, studios, monuments and homes of our American friends. From historic Savannah to the rolling countryside of Pennsylvania, through the scenic Skyline Drive and on to the impressive city architecture of the Capital, we will explore majestic homes, prestigious monuments, Colonial villages and friendly towns, classic cities and magnificent structures both natural and man made.


Quality Lodging:

Lodging on all of our tours is selected from a range of high quality, comfortable B & Bs, country manors, small family run hotels, specialty mansions or resorts. We stay most of the tour, either two or three nights in the same place for comfort and relaxation. Travel time and mileage occasionally will require a one night stay.
